Weston is doing much better. Preliminary blood test results indicate that there is no infection. We won't have the full results until his blood culture is complete after 72 hours. Just to be on the safe side, they started him on antibiotics. They tested his blood gasses again this afternoon (I'm still struggling with that concept), and they were the best numbers the staff had seen in a long time. His pH was at a good-for-preemie number.
He gained an ounce today, so he's up to 1 lb 3 oz. We were warned it could drop again because he was given so much fluid today, but we'll take the weight gain!
Weston definitely has no brain bleed! He is scheduled to have a kidney and bladder ultrasound tonight. We sat there touching him for a long time tonight, which is just what all three of us needed after a rough day.
They are going to wait a few days before trying to feed him again, and they are also waiting on the picc line. Because they switched out all of his IVs today, there is no longer the sense of urgency to get the picc line put in.
Yesterday, they had turned Weston's oxygen off, because he was breathing 21% oxygen, which is regular room air. Today, he was back up to 42% because of all the craziness.
I remarked to Shannon that if we had just shown up a couple hours earlier and then came tonight again, we would not have witnessed any of the scary stuff going on. We would not have known that they were even testing for sepsis. Of course the staff would have told us, but we would not have had to spend all those hours in agonizing worry. On the other hand, if Weston is going through something hard, we want/need to experience it too and be there for him in that way.
On our way in, we ran into a high school classmate of mine whom I had not seen since high school. I knew she was there through Facebook but hadn't heard from her in a while. Her baby was also born at 24 weeks, and he is a couple weeks older than Weston. We didn't talk long, but her family is experiencing the same roller coaster that we are. Please pray for her little one as well, Baby R.
Weston will get to meet more of his extended family this weekend!
